Library of Congress in Thomas Jefferson Building, Washington DC




The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world. 
167 million items in 470 languages - this is a library collection.  
There are over 38 million books and other printed materials, 3.6 million recordings, 14 million photos, 5.5 million maps, 8.1 million pages with notes and 70 million manuscripts.

The first library was founded in 1800 by President John Adams. In this time it was a collection 
of 740 books and 3 maps which was destroyed during the British invasion. 
President Thomas Jefferson (at that time retired) offered his personal library.
In 1815 Congress bought the Library of Jefferson 6,487 books for 23,950 dollars
