New Bern is the second oldest town in North Carolina (after Bath). The founder of the town,  Baron Christopher De Graffenried was born in a small village in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. He was the leader of the Swiss and Palatine immigrants. This group settled down in North Carolina in British North America.  New Bern was founded in 1710. The New Bern's flag is a copy of the original German Bern flag.

 

New Bern jest drugim najstarszym miastem w Północnej Karolinie (pierwszym jest Bath). Założyciel New Bern - Baron Christopher De Graffenried pochodził z małego miasteczka w kantonie Bern, Szwajcaria. Był on przywódcą grupy imigrantów ze Szwajcarii i Niemiec, którzy osiedlili się w Północnej Karolinie (Brytyjska Północna Ameryka).

Birthplace of Pepsi - in his pharmacy Caleb Bredham invented "Brad's Drink" which later was patented as Pepsi-Cola.

The Baxter Four-faced Street Clock is an important landmark in New Bern. This large clock was manufactured by the Seth Thomas Clock Company of Thomaston, Connectiucut in 1920.

The Athens Theater located in historic part of New Bern was open in 1911. At this time it was considered one of the most beautiful and  best equipped theaters in the South.

It was a place for silent movies, vaudeville, travelling theater troupes.
