Lady slippers orchids in a North Carolina forest

The lady slipper flowers are wild orchids in North America - named because of their resemblance to a delicate pair of women's slippers. In the North Carolina forests we find two types of these orchids: pink and yellow.

Native American folklore tells the story of a young girl who ran barefoot in the snow in search of a cure to save the tribe. She was found collapsed on her way back with her frozen feet. The beautiful flowers of the slipper grew where her feet were, as a reminder of her courage.

The roots of the lady's slipper were also widely used by Native Americans as medicinal herbs.
